Laws of Robotics
By Philip Buckley
When watching a film or T.V. you often hear about the primary law of the robot, have you wondered about the origin of this? Isaac Asimov's famous 3 Laws of Robotics (although previously hinted at in some earlier works); Were first explicitly stated in his 1942 story "Runaround". First Law A robot may not injure a human being or, through interaction allow a human being to come to harm. Second law A robot must obey orders given it by human beings Except where such orders would conflict with the first Law Third Law A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second Law. (In the 1985 book "Robots and Empire" Asimov created the Zeroth Law to which the other Laws were subordinate. Asimov felt that the initial three laws were insufficient to protect society at large) ZEROTH Law A robot may not injure humanity or, through inaction, allow humanity to come to harm
